AsphaltX is an early-stage startup poised to revolutionize the $100 billion global asphalt pavement industry with a groundbreaking platform of asphalt binder modifiers. Our key proprietary technology is built on ionic polymer additives (IPAs) that were engineered by our CTO, Dr. Hunaid Nulwala. These advanced polymers stabilize bitumen in asphalt, and enhance rheology, moisture tolerance, and aging resistance.

What We Do – Enhancing Asphalt with Ionic Polymers
Bituminous asphalts are central to modern infrastructure yet suffer from performance limitations under extreme weather and heavy traffic loads. Asphalt rutting and cracking are exacerbated by sunlight, temperature extremes, oxidative aging and moisture damage over the application’s lifecycle. The status quo experiences rapid degradation: Traditional polymer modifiers, such as styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS), often lose binding properties and phase‐separate under thermal cycling, resulting in cracking, degradation of asphalt and ultimately failure.
These traditional additives are inherently limited by their solid state and inflexibility upon asphalt setting. AsphaltX has developed an ideal additive that prevents bitumen separation by making bitumen components compatible and imparting a plasticizing effect to prevent material failure. AsphaltX’s product is tailored to increase the lifetime stability of asphalt.
The cutting-edge material at the heart of AsphaltX is an IPA which is based on copolymer ionic moieties (anions and cations). These are unique materials with broad temperature stability, unique binding properties, material compatibility, and ability to be augmented, providing meaningfully enhanced performance at a lower expense. They are also non-volatile, with lower VOC content and are less of an environmental burden.
